I posted this on the other thread...but i'm going to post it again becuse it's a question that confounds me.
My question, for all of you who have posted is this: Who do you hate a particular team? What about the team makes it hateable? Is it the coach, the players, a particular attitude, the fact that they actually win (i noticed most of those teams on the list are championship teams)? Anyway--enlighten me here!

I'll enlighten you...
Things that could potentially make a team hateable:
1. Annoying fans you know who never shut up about how their team "got robbed" or "is awesome" or "rules" or something. 2. Crybaby megastars on said team who whine all the time (ie: Terrell Owens... Kobe Bryant... Michael Irvin back in the day) could easily make me hate a team. 3. A smug thingyyness that comes from winning... a good example of this would be Duke. Yes, they are great, yes they have won a lot, but now all their fans are arrogant jerks and Duke just has this kind of smarm about them that annoys the heck out of me. and yes, I used the word "smarm". 4. An evil coach: ie: whoever Steve Spurrier coaches, I hate. Any team he has ever coached, I probably still hate. Sorry Duke, Florida, and South Carolina.
Hope that sheds some insight. And of course, keep in mind, that my usage here of the word "hate" is meant in a sporting, semi-kidding way.

Ok, definition of "most hated" teams. Teams that always consider themselves the champs because they won a championship a couple of times and now consider themselves the kings(excluding my yankees of course)

Geostar... I'll try to answer you and Rob together here.
First, Rob, I think Greg highlighted most of the reasons I can't stand certain teams so I'll just summarize my thoughts in a couple words:
ARROGANCE / thingyINESS / EGO (whether by an individual member or whole team, ego drives me nuts i.e. Barry Bonds, T.O., Keyshawn Johnson, Kobe, Randy Moss, Ray Lewis, (notice, no hockey players on there although once upon a time you might have been able to throw in Patrick Roy)
Favortism - in the world of college football where polls mean everything, notre dame, ohio st., and 90's Nebraska could lose back to back games without dropping out of the top 10. Maybe it's not fair to dislike them for something that's out of their control but that's irritating.
Whining - Aside from being a Michigan fan, seriously the number one reason I developed a serious disdain for the Ohio St. program was listening to John Cooper complain about everything except his poor coaching after a loss. He'd blame the refs, field conditions, he blamed his own fans for not showing up, he even said UT cheated in the bowl game saying they used illegal cleats. Win or lose, be a good sport about it.
I don't hate teams just for winning. The Yankees are fun to watch usually b/c they play the game so well. I feel the same way about the Patriots; they win as a team and you don't find any egos on that team.
Now... as for Dallas, I think my comments above probably answer this too. I gotta admit I'm a huge Eagles fan, but growing up watching guys like Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, even Emmitt early in his career, Keyshawn Johnson, T.O. all sporting world class egos. I think Irvin is largely responsible for the stupid celebrations WR's give after a 10 yd. catch. Do your job, go back to the huddle and shut up. T.O. couldn't have gone to a better team as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't stand him being on my team. The guys a cancer. I hope he takes the Cowboys down with him.

Alright, i admit that i'm following this thread with amusement. When i was a kid i was a sports fan through and through. I collected sports cards, watched any game i could find etc. Somewhere in highschool (i think it was about the time i picked up the guitar) i lost all interest. These days i find more enjoyment in watching fans talk about sports than i do watching sports. My biggest gripe with sports, though, is the fact that for many fans being a fan means more than just watching and enjoying a game. It means being crazy-dedicated to the teams--in many cases at the cost of the truly important things in life--and living life around the sport.
I do still enjoy watching baseball for fun (I appreciate the artistry and strategy of baseball as compared to the brutishness of football, and speed of basketball), and i can tolerate football and basketball if i have some sort of personal stake in the game or if i enjoy the company.
As far as the favoritism bit...i was never a fan of college football because i can't stand a league where rankings aren't decided by actual wins/losses. It defies the logic of common sense.

Rob,
See your -1 Karma score. That's for not liking college football and one more remark like that and you're out of here!
I am from Knoxville, TN and let me just tell you, if you grew up in a town like this, you would probably have a higher opinion of college football... it's the best thing about the south if you ask me. and what you see as obsessive madness, we see as a great unifier of people... I may not have much in common with someone around here, but we can always talk about the Vols... it's a common point of interest for almost everyone in the community. It's also a big part of family life... I grew up going to games with my dad and his dad... we sat in the same seats for years. I've had a familiy member at every UT home game (either me, my dad, or his dad) since the 1940s... we don't miss them for anything and I'm looking forward to my boy being old enough to go with us too. It's almost like UT football is a small part of the family and there are a LOT of families around here who would say the same thing.
Some folks take it too far, but if you see it from the inside, you learn to see it through the right lens... it's a lot of fun.
- Greg

I knew that posting on a sports thread would get me into trouble. Why oh why didn't i listen to the tiny voice of reason that told me to shut up!
Oh well...not only am i the only member of this board with negative karma, my karma has somehow fallen to -3. I guess i've always known that my deviant ways would come back to haunt me.
