I haven't been playing out much lately and really haven't been worrying too much about the whole music career thing lately which is probably why I haven't been writing here too much. I've been working more at the daddy / husband / pastor thing which has been good.
This past Wednesday at New City singer-songwriter night we had a really fun time. Only 4 writers were there to play... me, and 3 friends of mine (Andy, Adam, and Chris). Instead of playing songs for each other that we've all heard before, we decided to give ourselves a challenge. The girls who were there to volunteer were sent to come up with a line that we in turn would have to write into a song in the next 30 minutes. So, the gals went away and came back with this nugget:
Back in the day when pepsi came in glass
And off we went... we had 30 minutes to write something. It was really fun to be challenged like that and what was amazing was that everyone came up with something totally different and also really cool. Chris told a story of a guy trapped in a dead end job longing for a childhood when things were easier and there was less to worry about. Andy had this jangly pop-song going and when he finishes it, it is going to be really cool. Adam is a really great lyricist and he had a verse, chorus, and second verse and had already taken that first line and referenced radio flyer wagons, the Colorado river, and the Apostle Paul. Show off.
I actually finished a rough draft of an entire song in that 30 minutes... I guess that whole 52 songs project taught me to just spit them out quickly or something... it's okay... not an award winner, but not horrible either. I'll touch it up a bit and post it here when I feel like it's finished.
Then on the way home from the cafe, I got into a wreck... a 19 year old wasn't paying attention and ran a red light. It was weird... as soon as I hit him, 3 people got out of his car and ran away, leaving the driver alone... I guess they were drinking or on something or else they just weren't very good friends. Fortunately no one was hurt and the damage to my car is minimal... just some scratches and dents.
Okay... so maybe my week wasn't that interesting...
How are all of you?
