I had the priveledge to help run this event this year along with my good friend Bill Wolf... it was a whole lot of fun. We had 22 writers over the course of two nights in a really fun "survive and advance" type of format. There were 4 rounds... only 8 of the 22 writers survived the first round... then we narrowed it to 4, then 2, then the champion.
Congrats to Josh Bales (www.joshbales.com) from Chattanooga who won the contest this year... I had never met or heard of Josh before Friday night, but I was really impressed with the maturity in his writing... some really, really good stuff.
Coming in a VERY close second was Knoxville's own Josh Johnson. Josh is only a senior in high school so the sky's the limit for this guy... I wish I had been writing songs like he writes when I was 18... who knows where I'd be now. Let this be a lesson to you kids...
The other two semi-finalists were Adam Whipple and Chris Tappin, both friends, both great writers. The other quarter-finalists were Taylor Corum, Brad Passons, Chris Perkins, and Josiah Leming.
It was great to not be in the contest or judging the contest... just making sure everyone was having a good time and the thing was running smoothly... and all of that went great so I had a really great time. There were a few people who got mad about not doing better than they did but I guess that's to be expected... most people were cool about it though. Music is such a subjective thing... to have 3 judges sit up front and decide who is best is... in the grand scheme of things, kind of silly. We could have had 3 different judges and probably had different winners....
So, the New City Songwriter Shootout Champion list looks like this:
2006 - Josh Bales
2005 - Nancy Haney
2004 - Greg Adkins (it was a down year...)
2003 - Bethany Nobles
2002 - I don't know... wasn't there and no one I ask can remember...
