(Posted this on the "latest news" page but I thought I'd put it here too...)
Here at my church in Knoxville, every spring and every fall we have "Bluegrass Sunday" where our usual worship team is replaced by a full fledged bluegrass band. We started doing this two or three years ago and it quickly became one of the congregation's favorite things that we do. We've been lucky enough to have right here in our congregation a world class banjo player and an amazing upright bass player. We also have a mandolin and a fiddle, and then me trying to hold my own with my mediocre guitar playing...
Anyway, after doing these services for a few years, I had the idea to take the band into the studio to make a record, and we're just about finished. I cannot tell you how excited I am about how it is turning out...it is going to be really, really good in my humble opinion. Sometimes in the studio the work comes hard and you struggle to get good performances... that hasn't been the case here... person after person has come in and simply knocked their parts out of the park. We've had some world class musicians come in on banjo, dobro, mandolin, guitar, and bass... seriously, this record is going to cook, and that has very little to do with me so I don't mind to brag on these awesome players. The whole thing is just shaping up awesome, right down to the packaging (which is going to be non-traditional and very cool).
The record is called "The Bluegrass Service" and follows the progression of a church service with a call to worship, a group of hymns, a communion song, some songs focused on prayer, songs of invitation, and a benediction. I contributed one original song and my friend Bill Wolf contributed another... the rest of the songs are by other people. The complete track listing is:
1. Amazing Grace (prelude)
2. I'll Fly Away (Traditional) / I Saw the Light (Hank Williams)
3. Lutheran Hymn (Mike Roe)
4. Behold My Weary Soul (Bill Wolf)
5. When the Roll is Called up Yonder (traditional)
6. By the Mark (Gillian Welch / David Rawlings)
7. Beautiful Scandalous Night (Daugherty / Hindalong)
8. Pray where you Are (The Lost Dogs)
9. Uncle Joe's Bunions (Greg Adkins)
10. Forgiveness Waltz (Jonathan Rundman)
11. I Believe in You (Bob Dylan)
12. Last Song (Julie Miller / Bill Mallonee)
13. Postlude
I should have the CDs available on the site to order sometime around March 1st. They will be $12.00 including shipping.
