Hey gang... what have you all been reading this summer? Here's my list of things I've read in the past couple of months:
Cannery Row - John Steinbeck the Long Valley - John Steinbeck The Moon is Down - John Steinbeck The Pearl - John Steinbeck To a God Unknown - John Steinbeck Confessions of a Reformission Rev - Mark Driscoll The Secret Message of Jesus - Brian McLaren Portofino - Frank Schaeffer Saving Grandma - Frank Schaeffer Zermott - Frank Schaeffer Body Piercing Saved my Life (inside the phenomenon of Christian rock) - Andrew Beaujon.
I love reading fiction in the summer... Love me some Steinbeck and the Frank Schaeffer trilogy was really enjoyable.
What about you guys?

Just picked up a copy of Body Piercing myself, very interested... been reading through Five Love Languages (eleven days & i'm married! whoa!!), trying to read Dostoevsky's Crime & Punishment (not bad at first, hasn't caught on though), some Narnia (Voyage of the Dawn Treader), started some "heady" reads (Truth about tolerance, Total Truth) but haven't finished them....
Hey greg, have you finished Secret Message of Jesus? What did you think about it? How does it compare to McLaren's other books? (I've read the New Kind of Christian trilogy & Generous Orthodoxy & wrote my undergrad thesis on his work, so I'm both a little burned out and curious as to what Secret Message is all about)

I'm not Greg, but for myself, this was the best book by McLaren. New Kind of Christian is a great book (trilogy) but Secret Message focused on some seriously inescapable truths about the teachings of Jesus that we shallow out (in my humble opinion) from the pulpit.
It's my favorite of his but his other stuff is really good. I'm also burned out on him, though. Recently I just picked up a book at the Cornerstone Festival called "Rock Stars On God" by Doug van Pelt. So far, so good. Interesting but not mind blowing. Other than that I broke down and bought all of John Eldredge's stuff. I'm, so far, seriously unimpressed. Only read 1 and 1/2 books though so it might get better. Oh yeah, I picked up some Piper stuff because I've always wanted to get into his work and it's been very good so far. Refreshing would be a better word.
Also, I'm a huge Steinbeck fan myself and I think everyone should be. Read ALL his stuff. It's so worth it and many of them are short reads.

Read? I haven't really had time to read. I will now that I'm back from San Antonio, though. Well, that's after writing a lot of stuff and picture essays and whatnot.

I just finished Rob Bell's "Velvet Elvis" which was chop full of theological morsels to chew on I'm reading "Hurt" by Chap Clark and so far it's a pretty dark but honest look into the world of teenagers. I just bought the Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe... all 800+ pages of dark, freaky, mostly drug-induced, imaginative storytelling for only $8. What a steal. I must confess a gross sin while I'm at it... I've become hooked on Sudoku so I bought a cheap book of sudoku puzzles. I know it's not reading but I had to get it off my chest. I feel better now.

My wife just made me watch "Pride and Prejudice". Does that count as literature?

I finally finished reading "The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde and other stories" the other day. "Jeckyll and Hyde" was a chore to read - a lot more boring than you'd think. The other stories were better and it really took me very little time to read those. The best was "The Bottle Imp." (The other stories were "Markheim" and "The Body-Snatcher").
I'm now reading "God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It" by Jim Wallis.
I've been wowed by it so far - reading it seems a lot like reading my religious rants in my livejournal! Except, it's more organized.

Yo.. if anyone has read "Hurt" by Chap Clark I'd love to chat with ya about some of the observations he has concerning to the teenage life and how to approach them via youth ministry.

i read the novelization of Superman Returns. It was better than the movie (which I loved). I liked Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde - granted I read it about 15 years ago. But I remember liking it.

So, back to McLaren. I read A New Kind of Christian and I liked it though it made me mad. I have learned that my favorite sermons and books tend to irritate me on some level and this is a good thing. Anyways, I don't know what to think about McLaren most days. I don't know whether to warn everyone against him or to buy his books by the cartload to give out for free. Is anybody in the same boat? It seems like everyone else either loves him or wants him dead.(probaly not really) I'm just not sure which side I am on.
That is all.

For those of you who look at the illustrious list of books being read by those listed above and feel rather like an idiot because some of those books make you sit and go, "Huh?" and the mere mention of John Steinback makes you try to hold back an audible grown, I'll be the first to reveal my very juvenile list of summer reading. And, no, I am not reading these with my eleven-year-old, these are for me, myself, and I alone.
Grooves - (can't remember the author's name) - about a boy who using a needle and a cone made of poster board during science class finds hidden messages in his jeans and uncovers an evil plot. You might be able to find a deep meaning in that, but don't hurt yourself.
The Silver Sthingy of Solomon Snow - Kaye Umansky - Rich boy left on poor family's door step, soon to discover who he is.
The Dark Hills Divide - Patrick Carman - Young girl discovers evil enchantment or something like that and must save the world.
Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book - Oh, that was when I was figuring out what we were having for supper.
So there you have it that's about as deep as I get. I tried to read a book called Gracious Christianity, but my ADD personality couldn't stick with it. Just so you know I am not a total flake, I did thouroughly enjoy Blue Like Jazz last spring. (I know, I'm slow.)

to arthur's comment... yeah, i definitely feel you on McLaren. His books challenged me in some ways (often to stay w/ what I believed already) but at the same time radically changed the way I look at and approach a lot of topics. It's like I often totally agree and resonate with the thought process that gets him to his points but don't entirely agree with those conclusions. Tis strange, and aggravating, but definitely opened my eyes to see parts of my faith very differently. Same evidence, different applications I guess. That's my two cents.
to meriam: haha, I only wish I had time to read half of these books on the list... even my own list =-o (i'm big on Narnia right now... that's high-falutin stuff right there =D)

What's a Silver Sthingy?
What was the word supposed to be before the filter kicked in and made it "thingy"

Okay, that was weird. It's supposed to be "sthingy." I have no idea what kind of a typo I did to make it mad. Sorry, I'll start proof-reading better.
Do you get to pick the ads that go on this board, because right now there is an add for John Steinbeck, incuding in Spanish.
Narnia rocks! It's my favorite. I read it every summer growing up. As an adult it has a whole new meaning.
