Just want to say that his new record "The Animal Years" is awesome and the song "Girl in the War" might be my favorite song that I've heard this year. Awesome.

Hey, Greg I downloaded some of Josh's music. I really like it alot. I like his new record and the one before it. I think I first heard of him right here in the forum. We sure do seem to have similar tastes in music.

Yeah man... great minds think alike. At least, that's what I've heard. I would have figured you would have really liked Josh... "the Animal Years" is a great record.

Uh... you guys are sneaky. I downloaded this today over emusic and I've heard it through once... amazing. I've heard various folks (at least you) throw his name around and I've never had cash on iTunes etc. to buy it (my preferred method for stuff I don't know I'll at least 75% like). So yeah... next month, I'm gonna download at least the Girl in the War digital EP, or maybe Golden Age of Radio (love the two free tracks I heard). Just a great collection of songs... I'm very pleased/surprised/excited. Thanks again!

Hey, sorry to resurrect this thread, but I have a new issue: I have 39 downloads on eMusic and I don't know what to go with next.
First thing's first:
Have you heard any of Ritter's other material? I've gotten Animal Years and Girl in the War, but I was wondering what you thought (if anything) about Hello Starling or The Golden Age of Radio. I've gotten a few mp3s from GAoR but haven't listened to them much... seemed like more Americana and less melancholy/ something than Animal Years (also streamed the "4 songs" EP on Rhapsody and wasn't terribly impressed, though I'm not sure which songs were from the second album and which were from the first).
Okay... if not those, then i have several other choices...
1) Patty Griffin: Impossible Dream (the real question being not if I get this, but in what form: would you recommend the full "package" or should I pick it up off eMusic? I listened to it on Rhapsody too and thought it felt a little less connected than the other records... I liked it, but would agree w/ Greg that it's probably not as high as 1000 kisses on my list).
2) Katy Bowser - All of My Friends (Hey, she's not my favorite Peg, but she is a Peg, and this would be a great way to jump into her music... esp. w/ only a 6 song EP)
3) Justin McRoberts - Christmas Songs (All I can say is "heck yeah" and "should I just buy this from the man himself?" b/c I believe in his music and work)
4) David Wilcox - Live Songs & Stories (have like 8 tracks I got from a friend in India last summer... any thoughts on his stuff? I go from awesome (Love can show the way) to eh (Your Words Alone))
5) Linford Detweiler - Unspoken Requests (only b/c there's not more Over the Rhine to sink my teeth into... I tell you they make me want to do something amazing... not that I can, but their music absolutely inspires me...)
I think that's all I got... I have a lot more I would buy/download if it were on eMusic. Thanks for reading and any responses/suggestions you might have... things are getting quiet around here so I thought i'd ask a question to stir it up a bit =)

Tough questions...
I'm not familiar with any of Ritters other albums so I can't help you there...
I'd pick up Impossible Dream for sure on emusic. The packaging is fine but nothing special (digipack which I don't like). Katy Bowser... haven't heard much so not much to say there. Justin - support the man. buy the real CD. Wilcox - yeah, he's great. You're right... can be hit or miss, but I like a lot of this album. Make sure you get "Moe"! It's worth the price of admission. The Linford record is great but I have a standing rule with OtR... I have to buy the actual albums... I just like to have them all in my collection. They always have great photography and notes. They're taking preorders for their new Christmas album "Snow Angels" on Overtherhine.com right now.

Okay, sorry to jump back in (and maybe we should start a new thread)... but Greg, you've been living with Hem for awhile... what can you tell me about Funnel Cloud? I got a free download of "Not California" and it was enough for me to retract my previously posted Carpenters comparison. What's the rest of the record like? How does it compare to their earlier work?

Do you have any other Hem records? Funnel Cloud is good, but if you don't have Rabbit Songs or Eveningland, I'd get those first. Funnel Cloud is a bit more uptempo, but it's still pretty mellow. Not California is a great song, no doubt... it's one of the best on the record.

Hey Greg,
I remember you recommending those... unfortunately I can't get them on eMusic (my sole digital music expendature at this point). If I like Funnel Cloud, would I like their other work?
