So Friday night, I played a show with the great Dave Potts (www.davepotts.com) at The Daily Grind in Murphy, NC. It was without a doubt, the most fun I've had doing a show to date.
Our original plan was for me to play about 45 minutes and then for Dave to play 45 minutes and then to maybe do a few songs together at the end. Well, when we got there and figured out the vibe of the room, we decided to change our plans. It's a coffeehouse, but they also serve wine by the glass and the crowd was very much an older, wine drinking crowd... not your normal coffeehouse crowd at all.
So, instead of the split sets, we decided to play together the whole time. We took turns playing songs the whole night and it was just an absolute blast. Dave was jumping in on guitar on my songs... I was adding piano and harmonica to his... we did some covers... it was kind of anything goes. What was amazing was how well it all worked... It felt like we had been playing together for a long time, even though we just met for the first time the day before. It was that rare musical moment where things just clicked... as a musician, you kind of live for those moments.
I played Old Radio, The Bush Leagues, I See a lot of You in Me, Connor's Lullaby, Someday, Boy in the Bubble, Little, Talkin' Hardees Blues, The Black Keys, Romantic Comedy, Tattered Old Notebook, On the Train Back Home, and probably a few others I'm forgetting.
Covers we played were:
Holy Now (Peter Mayer)
Next Best Western (Richard Shindell)
I Will be Here (Pierce Pettis)
Long Ride Home (Patty Griffin)
Paint me a Birmingham (?)
and finally... and I never thought I'd do this...
Fire and Rain (James Taylor)
Dave and I are hoping to do a multi-city mini-tour (yes, two hyphenated words in a row) in early 2007. If you're interested in booking us together, email me and we'll talk about it... it's going to be fun.
