Hey everyone...
Just wanted to let you know about the show last night in Conyers, GA at Rockdale Community Church... in a word, it was awesome.
And I don't mean me, but just the church and the way they treated us and all that... these are great people down here and they were just more than kind... certainly more than I'm used to.
I made it to Conyers around 4:00 yesterday after stopping in Kennesaw to have lunch with Ron Davis (http://www.moreron.com) which was great. Ron is a big supporter of indie singer-songwriter types like me and I so appreciate his friendship and support... he's a cool guy.
The church had my name on their sign and it was spelled right which always helps... I have to tell you... it's really weird to pull up to a church where your name is on their sign in big letters... I just feel like such a dork when that happens. Perhaps, because I am one... not sure.
To give you an idea of how well they treated us, and this is the first time this has ever happened for me, they had a green room setup with baskets of snacks and snapple and water (not to mention the barbeque feast they brought in about an hour before the show... holy smokes that was good barbeque... they hooked us up right...
Anyway, the actual show part went really well too. My friend Danny Rosenbalm who just recently moved to Atlanta came and played with me and he just smoked all night on everything he played. that makes it sound like he was smoking cigarettes or something... not how I meant it. I meant he played really well. You get it... Anyway, he played electric guitar (very reverbed and washed out almost making it sound like a pedal steel) and also some mandolin and acoustic. I played acoustic, piano, and harmonicas like I usually do.
Our setlist looked like this:
I Believe in You (Bob Dylan song)
Old Radio
The End of You and Me
The Black Keys
Talking Church of the Future Blues
Are you out there Tonight
I See a Lot of You in Me
Connor’s Lullaby
Put Back Together (the new song you've been helping me with)
Rumbling Around (I wrote this song about Rockdale church in the green room before the show... it was kind of stupid funny but they really seemed to like it. Their pastor's last name is "Rumble" so the key line was "you can hear the spirit rumbling around"... yeah, kind of corny but that probably got the best reaction of anything I did all night!)
Heavenly Descent (open D)
Uncle Joe’s Bunions
Not Another Worship Song
Before You
Be Thou My Vision
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
That's the first time I've ever done a transition into a worship thing at the end... it was nice... they really seemed to appreciate that. Also, thanks so much for those of you who helped me out with advice on my new song "Put Back Together"... I never know until I play a song on stage if I'm going to like it or not, and I really liked this one... it clicked and a few people commented on it afterwards so I think that's a keeper. I really appreciate the help... I don't think it would have made it to "keeper-status" if you hadn't helped out.
Anyway... I slept until 11:00 this morning which was incredible and I'm going to just kill time in Atlanta until the show tonight in Duluth and Higher Grounds... I'll post about that tomorrow sometime. I am supposed to play about a 3 hour set tonight... 8:00 - 11:00 so that's always trying but I'm sure it will be fun. I may not have a voice for church on Sunday but hey, that's rock and roll...
