I just found out that my friend Sam Wicker has passed away. Sam posted regularly on this board under the name "growingyoung". I don't know all of the specifics of Sam's condition, but I know that he had a heart transplant when he was younger and his health had begun to deteriorate in the last year or so.
I got to know Sam when I was working at West Towne Christian Church here in Knoxville. Sam used to come to The Well on Wednesday nights... he was always there early offering to help with things. Sam was a huge Andrew Peterson fan... when we hosted their Christmas tour a few years ago, Sam came early and helped out all day. Sam lived near Andrew in Nashville and I think they had become friends over the years. I'll always remember his willingness to serve that day... he really went above and beyond.
Sam also has been a huge supporter of me and my music. When "Lower than the Angels" came out, I think Sam bought nearly 20 copies... after awhile I tried to just give them to him but he wouldn't have it. He told me he wanted to support me so I could make more music. I'm pretty sure everyone he knew got that record for a Christmas present that year. The first day I had pre-orders available for "Chase the Western Sky" there was an email from Sam ordering several copies.
I don't know the details of his passing but I'm sure it was due to his deteriorating health. What I do know is that Sam was a man who loved his Jesus and his suffering is now over. Knowing Sam, he's probably running through heaven trying to get front row seats to the Rich Mullins concert.
It was an honor to know you Sam. You will be missed.
