Hey there guys and gals (and robot spammers),
This week has been pretty dang cool. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Chris has been mixing the record in Asheville. This is the part of the process where he opens up each song and really digs in to the sounds to make everything smooth. He listens to each instrument individually and decides if it needs compression, eq, or reverb... then he tries to get the levels exactly right. It's a fairly long and tedious process and fortunately one that I know nothing about so I didn't have to go to Asheville this week.
I knew it would be hard for me knowing he was working on the record with me at home so we did something pretty cool... we setup a video conference on ichat and he let me watch him mix the record. that way, if he had a question for me about my preference, I was right there. I could see and hear what he was doing the whole time and could ask questions. I didn't have many questions because I didn't understand what he was doing most of the time, so mainly I just made my bobble-head dolls dance to the music on the video conference. Chris probably thinks I'm insane.
Okay, so... here's the thing... THE MIXES SOUND AMAZING. the difference between the rough mixes you take home during the recording process and the REAL mixes at the end is striking... these are like different songs. Chris has just done an amazing job and all we have so far are the first mixes... we'll probably end up doing 2 or 3 before the final mixdown.
I can't WAIT for you guys to hear this. I'm pretty psyched about it! Now I have to decide on a track order... probably the hardest part for me. I never know what order to put these things in. I think I know that the first track will be "Old Radio" and the last track will be "Further Up and Further In". What happens between those tracks? We'll see.
Also... after way too much back and forth, I've decided to name the record...
