So days 3 and 4 of recording are in the books... they were good but also long. On day 3, we started out with River coming back to finish all of the percussion. He played cajon, doumbek, djembe, congas, bongos, bottle caps, tambourine, and my favorite name for an instrument ever: The Cameroonian Silkworm Cocoon Rattle. They take these silkwork cocoons and they dry them and then fill them with seeds. They then tie them together into a long string of cocoons and they put that into a woven bag. You don't really hold it up in the air and shake it, you set it in your lap and tap it with your hands... so really, it's just a very elaborate shaker but it sounded great. Now when you see "Cameroonian Silkworm Coccon Rattle" in the liner notes, you'll know what I'm talking about.
River left around 2:00 and from there we began tracking the acoustic guitars. On my first record, Andy Osenga played pretty much all of the guitars because... well, he was way better than me. This time around, I decided that even though there are people way better than me, I'm going to do my own acoustic guitar work. Of course, it's been 2 years and I'm a better player now than I was then. I'm still pretty basic and can really only strum, but I have gained some confidence. We recorded guitars the rest of day 3 and then also for most of day 4. At the end of day 4, we recorded a harmonium part for "My Jesus Won't Give up On Me" that is going to sound really great.
I am going to record some piano tracks here in Knoxville next week and then it's back to Asheville for 2 more days the week after next. We'll be tracking upright bass, electric bass, and also some keyboards on those 2 days. We'll also start on vocals.
Thanks for checking in on the updates gang... I'm looking forward to being finished with this and being able to share it with you guys.
