Well, just got back last night from the first 2 days working on the new record in Asheville, NC. Wow, this is going to be a different record than the first one, that's for sure! I am really excited about the direction it's taking and I think you guys are really going to love it. At least I hope so.
On Thursday, we spent about 3 hours going through all of the songs. By we, I mean me and Chris Rosser who is producing the record. We went through about 15 and narrowed the list down to a top 10. Then we talked for awhile about including a cover... I've been kicking around the idea of covering Julie Miller's great song "By Way of Sorrow". We decided to do it. That gives us 11 songs. The final 11 songs for this record are (in random order):
By Way of Sorrow (Julie Miller)
The End of You and Me
Old Radio
Further up and Further in
Put Back Together
My Jesus Won't Give up on me
Someday
Old Shoes
My Own Worst Enemy
On the Train Back Home
Boy in the Bubble
After lunch (at "The Lucky Otter"... a very unique burrito joint) we spent the rest of the day recording a scratch vocal and guitar track for every song along with a click track. Scratch tracks are what you start with so that the drummer will have something to play along with... we'll re-record the guitars and vocals later. We just kind of flew through each of these.
Friday, we spent the whole day recording drums. River Guerguerian is the drummer on this record and he, my friends, is amazing. He is a human metronome and a one take marvel... he did 2 takes on each song and pretty much played both perfectly each time. I was just incredibly impressed. The sign of a great studio drummer to me is one who brings his own microphones because he knows how he sounds good. River's that kind of guy.
He's also the kind of guy who carries around a suitcase full of talking drums, goat toes, every kind of shaker you could imagine, and who also has a cajon in his van. A cajon is a box that you sit on and play like a bongo... kick in the front and snare type sounds on the side. He's quite good at this too. So... the drums and percussion on this record will be kind of a mix between rock, americana / bluegrass, and world music. I think it's going to be awesome.
We finished all of the drum kit tracks and got started on the percussion stuff before we ran out of time. We go back to work for 2 more days in 2 weeks... the schedule there is to spend those 2 days finishing all of the percussion and then moving to acoustic guitars and bass. Things should start taking shape at that point. I hope to have some rough cuts for you to listen to sometime after that.
Thanks for checking in guys... I'll continue to keep you updated. There are a couple of pictures from the studio on my "photos" page.
