Yeah, so it's a little weird that I'm updating Album #2 before I even start on Album #1... oh well... Album #1 updates will be coming soon enough... we start July 5th!
I now have something down for 9 songs on Album #2... I'm not sure if I'll use them all or not, but they're starting to come to life. Some are working better than I thought they would, some worse. I put together a bluegrass version of "The Bush Leagues" that I really like a lot... that will be on there for sure.
Another thing I'm trying that is pretty fun is internet collaboration. There's this pedal steel player I like a lot who has played with Bill Mallonee... so I emailed him on a whim just to see if I could get him in the studio to play on the record. Well, it turns out, he has a studio at his house (which is in New Jersey) and he plays on records from there.
So, I sent him an mp3 of a song (One of my older songs called "Little"), and he sent me back a pedal steel part. All I do is drop it into the track, and it's just like he was here in the studio with me. Pretty cool, huh? Sometime in the next week or two, he'll send me 4 different pedal steel tracks for the song and I'll piece them together into the perfect take. Those of you who know me should know that I LOVE some good pedal steel playing. Not the over the top twangy style heard in classic country... the mournful, lonesome, tasteful style heard in lots of great music. Pedal Steel and Hammond B-3s... my two favorite sounds in the world. Well, other than like my wife and kid talking and stuff... you know what I mean.
Finally, I need a title for this thing. It's going to be kind of a B-sides record, but I can't think of a creative title for something like that that hasn't already been done. Over the Rhine has "Besides" (B-sides... get it?), Andrew Peterson has "appendix A"... any ideas for me?
My working title is "10 pounds of songs in a 5 pound bag".
