Well...
Recording has started on the "other" record and so far, it's going pretty well. I'm not an expert producer and I really can't ever seem to get things I produce to sound like they were done in a real studio, but that's because they weren't. Real studios have lots of equipment that costs lots of dollars. I have 2 microphones and a mac. So, the sonic quality is a little less than I like to hear, but it's the best I can do for free!
So far, the songs I have recorded are:
Proof (from 52 songs) Psalm (Don Heffington / Victoria Williams cover) Old Shoes (new) Turning Point (new) Still Small Voice (new) I Never want to Hurt You again (new) Little (from 52 songs)
None of those are done, but they all have something down. Some of them are turning out quite nicely I think. I'm excited to let you guys hear some of this hopefully before too much longer.

Sounds exciting at the least! Hmph on studios when we're supporting our Inide artists!

Exciting! Good to hear the update... and hey, if Andy O can pull it off, I'm sure your "home" record will be fantastic too (even if he does have a wee bit more equipment, haha) Sean (more posts coming today)

Yeah, Andy's got a good bit more equipment than me and he also actually knows how to use it. If someone dropped $20,000 worth of compressors, pre-amps, and EQs into my lap tomorrow, I wouldn't know what to do with them anyway. That stuff's complicated!
I just turn knobs until it sounds decent to me and that's about it... hopefully it works out okay.
I really think you guys are going to dig this little side-project record though... even if the sonic quality leaves a bit to be desired, I'm trying to make up for it with originality. So far, it is turning out to be incredibly diverse... really all over the map musically. There's an alt-country rocker, a celtic hymn, a middle of the night orchestral ballad (uh, whatever that means), a bluegrass / americana tune, and that's just on the first few tracks!
So far, I've played acoustic guitar (one song has 12 acoustic tracks), bass, drums, fender rhodes, piano, hammered dulcimer, melodica, accordion, shaker, tamborine, didgeridoo (really!), harmonica, and B-3 organ. I'm having way too much fun! I hope when I go to Asheville to make the "real" record I enjoy it this much!

Hey Sam,
That's an awesome idea... I actually sat down with my stack of Rich CDs and tried to figure out one that would be good to do... I couldn't settle on one so I kind of gave up on the idea. I'm pretty sure I couldn't pull off Elijah... vocally it's crazy tough.
I thought about Growing Young, Boy like me, Hello Old Friends, Promendade, and Wounds of Love. Any thoughts on those?

Well, I have always loved Growing Young, hence the name on here and myspace. So that would be my first choice out of those, Hello Old Friends would be number two. I'm not a musician so I don't know how hard it is to play things, is Hard to Get hard? I like that one too. However, I would be happy with anything. Go with Growing Young I guess.

What about "The Howling"? I've been playing with an arrangement of that and I kind of like it.
Hard to Get might be my favorite Rich song but I don't think I could do it justice so I'm a little scared of that one...

greg, i've heard the talking tom cruise blues - you shouldn't be afraid of Hard to Get. I like the Howling. That whole CD is amazing. I would still choose Growing Young over it though...
