Hey y'all...
Just wanted to drop a line here on the board and rave a bit about Greg's show on Friday night at Joes Java in Wilmington, Oh. It was a great show!
Greg was double-booked with Mark Townsend (former touring guitar player for DC Talk and Jen Knapp) who spent the first hour doing a mostly spontanious solo show. Mark is friends with the guy that runs Joe's and seemed to be a local favorite. Since he had to leave early, he played first. Mark is a fantastic guitar player, and his set was enjoyable. He's a pretty quirky guy on stage, but that lent to a fun hour. He played mostly original music and a couple of covers, and spent quite a bit of time noodling around with a looper. The show was enjoyable.
I think Greg was nervous about following an act like Mark (it's a tough order to fill), but he did an amazing job. My wife and i were talking afterwards and both of us agreed that the concert started when Greg took the stage. Y'all are familliar with his music so i don't have to say much about that--but it was the intimacy and honesty that really struck me.
My wife and i met back on the Caedmon's Call guild message board back in '99. We were both really into the indi/acoustic music thing because of it's simple honesty and the fact that we could relate to it. Having both grown up on CCM, it was a breath of fresh air. That is the same feeling that we got as we listened to Greg play on Friday night. There was no pretension, no glitz and glamour--just a real and honest guy playing for a dissapointingly small group of people. It carried Elizabeth and i back to the days when we first heard Bebo, Andrew P. and Caedmon's play. It was awesome.
If Greg is playing within three or four hours of your home it's definatly worth the drive to experience his music. This was a show we'll remember for life, and music that many more people need to hear.
