Well, things got better in a hurry... nothing like a show close to home to do that for ya. I played tonight at Lighthouse Christian Church here in Knoxville. For those who don't know, I used to be the Creative Arts Pastor at lighthouse... it was planted in 1998 and I was the worship leader for the first 4 years of the church... they've since moved out of the high school we used to meet in and are now in a building that strangely enough, is about 300 yards from my house. I quite literally could walk there.
So tonight was a lot of fun... my good buddy Bill Wolf opened for me with a full band, and did 4 of his really great worship songs. Bill has a record coming out really soon that I'm excited about... it's going to be great.
I borrowed his band for one song (Further up... Further in) and then went solo for the rest of the set. There was a good crowd there... about 90 or so. I played a lot of lighter material because probably 3/5ths of that crowd was under the age of 18. I played:
Further up, Further In
My Own Worst Enemy
Talkin' Hardees Monster Thick Burger Blues
Romantic Comedy
December
Your First Christmas
the End of You and Me
Connor's Lullaby
Cual Es Tu Problema Senor (with Bill translating)
Talkin' Church of the Future Blues
Come Lord Jesus (not another worship song)
Heavenly Descent
My Jesus Won't Give up on Me
It was a lot of fun. I'm not sure the Rick Warren joke went over well in the Talkin' Church song since my concert was part of a celebration to end their 40 days of community campaign they were doing... oh well... I thought it was kind of funny.
It was also hard to do Heavenly Descent, but I felt like I needed to. The person that song is about used to work with me at Lighthouse and the wounds are still pretty fresh for some people... I didn't say specifically what it was about, but people afterwards were asking... sorry to be vague here.
Anyway, thanks for continuing to read... I really appreciate it. If you're a lurker around here, post something... let me know you're out there!
I've got a light rest of the year as far as shows go. I'm doing an on air thing at WDVX I'm really excited about, and then a couple of coffeehouse dates in Chattanooga, but based on what happened in Bristol, I'm thinking hard about cancelling those shows. I'll almost for sure cancel one of them. I can't afford to spend two days in Chattanooga for $2 a day...
