October 13th-15th... 4 shows in 3 days!
Well, the first official "tour dates" are over... it seems so weird to even say that since I'm so new at this being on the road thing. We had an absolute blast though... I can see why people do this... it's a lot of fun. We met a lot of great people and saw a lot of new places.
My good friend Danny Rosenbalm came out with me and we packed the little mazda 626 to absolute maximum capacity... it was like a game of Tetris trying to pack that thing... Danny played acoustic guitar, mandolin, and pedal steel (but not at the same time) and I played piano, guitar, and a little harmonica.
We started off with a house concert in Lansing, Michigan... nice, small, and intimate. They had an indoor grill with it's own chimney. I had never seen that before... you have to take your grilling pretty seriously to have an indoor grill.
The next day we played twice... first at Great Lakes Christian College in the cafeteria during lunch. We were right on the verge of launching into a folk-rock rendition of "Lunch Lady Land" but decided against it.
That night it was on to Flint where we played at Ainsworth Baptist Church. Bruce and Jill Barnett put on a concert series there and we had a great time. Considering the first two concerts were Randall Goodgame and Eric Peters, we felt like we were in pretty good company. I just hope we lived up to that high standard... one kid did say we were his favorite, but nobody saw me slip him that twenty.
We drove all day Saturday south to Berea, KY for an evening show there at Ground Effects coffee. With a name like Ground Effects, we were a little unsure what to expect... we envisioned a place with a lot of low-riders parked in front with bass music pumpin... but fortunately, we were wrong. They have an awesome place there in Berea... great atmosphere, great coffee, just a great room all around. That was probably my favorite show of the mini-tour... we were so tired we just cut loose. Played some fun, obscure covers (robyn hitchthingy, uncle tupelo, over the rhine, benny skyn, scott miller, jayhawks) and I got to play a lot of originals I hardly ever play. We had a blast and we're hoping to play there again in the spring.
All in all, it was a great trip. I've got two weeks off and then the official CD release show at New City Cafe here in Knoxville on Friday the 28th. Andrew Osenga is coming to do a set that night and also Arthur Alligood too... it's going to be a blast. If you're reading this, you should come. Tickets will be $7.00 at the door.
Okay, I'm going to take a nap now. I'm wiped!
