Ok, here's the deal. Most of the songs I write have a strong relation to my personal experiences (my life). My favorite songs (of mine) are this way...and so are my least favorite.
My attempts at writing songs outside that parameter have yielded very mediocre results. I've struggled with why this is happening lately. I mean, I listen to other songwriters who seem to have an ability to tell a story or write a song without a remote chance of ever experiencing what they're talking about themselves. But they do a good job at it and I'm wondering if there's a secret to doing it that I can learn from someone...some thing...somehow.
Anyone else tend to do their creative expressions only from life experiences or have trouble not doing that? Any thoughts?

I'll bite... although this probably won't be much help.
You're right... some writers can tell stories that either come out of nowhere or are based on people and situations that they know. Those who can do it well make me mad because no matter how hard I try, I just can't do that. And try I have... but I've realized... I'm not really much of a storyteller.
From my own experience? I can do that all day blindfolded... been there and got the tattoo. I think this is kind of like it is in everything... you want what you don't have. If you're a basketball player with a good inside game, you want a 3-ball. If you're an introspective songwriter, you want story songs...
I'm not saying it can't be learned... I guess it can, but if it isn't what comes naturally, you'll have to work at it pretty hard (I think).
So, I know that's not helpful, but at least you're not in the boat alone!

I can't write a song to save my life, but I'm going to chime in on this anyway. As someone who is fascinated by the craft of songwriting (because I can't) I feel cheated and sometimes mad when I find out a story isn't true to the person who wrote the song. Even if it's true to the lyricist, but someone else is singing it, that's wrong to. Why? Because I don't like to be lied to.
So, my point is, if it ain't about you, I don't want to hear about it. Sorry for the cliche, but just be real.
